Habersham Congratulates Julie Mifsud – 2013 NKBA Northern California Kitchen Design Competition Winner

by Matt Eddy, CEO February 1st, 2013

Julie MifsudCongratulations to Julie Mifsud, principal, Julie Mifsud Interior Design! Her Habersham kitchen, shown here, was among the top winners in the 2013 National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) Northern California Design Competition. The design took third place in the Large Kitchen category.

We wrote about her lovely design several months ago and are reposting some of the story here in honor of her fabulous win!

Habersham Kitchen Custom Cabinetry by Julie Mifsud

For Julie Mifsud, no design job is too small.  It’s a business philosophy that’s served her well as she’s built her expansive design business and its loyal client base, which includes some of the Bay area’s biggest personalities.

It’s also what put her in touch with Habersham. At the time, a potential client contacted her to get her thoughts on a Wolfe Range with red knobs that he was thinking about installing in his kitchen.

She drove an hour and forty-five minutes to his home to discuss the range selection. During the meeting she asked her client a lot of questions to learn more about his lifestyle, his design tastes and his hopes for the kitchen itself.   Her client lived alone but Julie soon learned that his home would quickly fill up with grandchildren, family and friends during the holidays. She also learned that the kitchen was truly the heart of this home – where everyone gathered.

“As we spoke about ideas for the kitchen beyond the range, I learned that he had always wanted a space  that captured an  Old World look and feel reminiscent of his  European grandmother’s own kitchen – aged looks, meticulous detailing, and a warm and welcoming atmosphere,” says Julie. “ And, he wanted a kitchen that would effectively and efficiently serve his needs when he was home  alone, but could also  easily accommodate the extended family when they came to visit.”

Habersham Custom Kitchen Cabinetry Design by Julie Mifsud

With its hand-finished designs, Old World influences and versatile custom cabinetry capabilities, Julie thought Habersham offered the perfect design solution.  She showed her client  Habersham’s kitchen and bath portfolio and he  agreed that Habersham had the look he wanted. Together with  her contractor, Jeff Nelms, Nelms Construction, Habersham Sales Representative Jim Solada and the Habersham custom cabinetry team, Julie began working on a project that would grow from that single range to include  a complete kitchen and bulter’s pantry redesign, guest bath cabinetry and design solutions for other rooms in the home as well.

Among her client’s key requests was to have a space where he could prepare his coffee while watching stock market reports on TV.

So Julie designed what she likes to call the “coffee bar”, complete with a Miele coffee station above and a Sharp microwave drawer below. She housed them between two Habersham curio cabinets and made sure the area offered a clear sight line to the TV.  “The client loved the curios as he felt they really had a richly detailed, antique ‘furniture’ look.”

For the kitchen island, she and her client choose a Rohl copper bow front sink.  This design inspired Julie to carry out the curved design on both the front and back sides of the spacious island.  The soft, muted tones of the sink and the textural hues and thickness of the granite provide a rich complement to Habersham’s Sandemar finish with gold accenting.

“My client has an ongoing theme of understated elegance that flows throughout the home,” she adds. “He wanted moldings, granite edges and other design elements that felt substantial while staying true to this theme. He really made excellent choices on all these items.”

Julie carefully studied the placement of every detail.  For the island lighting, she chose two lanterns and spaced them in such a way that they would not obscure the view of Habersham’s hand-painted, wall-mount range hood.

The hand-painted motif found on the range hood is also carried out on a pantry door. Julie chose to change out the basic pantry door to a custom  panel door that  reflected the overall look of the rest of the kitchen cabinetry. She added a custom lead glass window above it.  To complete the look, she chose the same handle that appears on the integrated refrigeration cabinetry concealing a Thermador on  the other side of the room.  The overall kitchen cabinetry design calls upon other integrated cabinetry to creatively hide a dishwasher and other appliances too.

In addition to the kitchen, Julie worked with Habersham to design a Butler’s Pantry which reflects the same look and style of the kitchen. She also chose Habersham to create a home office space in the kitchen as well.  “Using Habersham helped tie the office into the overall space, so it doesn’t feel separate,”  she explained.

Speaking of creativity, we thought you might enjoy seeing how North Carolina designer, Debra Whitson, “The Big Picture Gal”  at Warehouse 2120 incorporated our custom kitchen cabinetry into her amazing, eclectic 5,500-square-foot stone and cedar shake lodge home renovation project, which was recently featured in WNC Magazine.Home of Debra Whitson -Warehouse 2120 -- Featured in WNC Magazine

Known affectionately as the “seductress of salvage” and the “queen of junk,” Whitson and her friend and interior design partner, Pamela D. Lee, scour flea markets, auctions, yard and estate sales throughout the southeast.  They display the “rescued home goods” they find at Warehouse 2120, the boutique shop Debra and husband Scott own in Hickory, NC.

Here, customers can explore the treasures Debra and Pamela have discovered, along with garden sculpture, jewelry and other found objects. Debra and Pamela operate their interior design business out of this space while Scott oversees the wholesale division of the company, which includes 2120 Label, a line of furniture he designs, and All From Boats, a colorful collection of furniture crafted from recycled fishing boats Debra Whitson's Kitchen featuring Habersham Custom Cabinetry - WNC Magazine Featurefrom the island of Bali.

As they’ve shown in their business, Debra, Scott and Lee love finding ways to rethink and repurpose everyday items.  And this philosophy was the guiding force behind the Whitson’s own home renovation project as well.  The Whitsons and Lee spent two-and-a-half years in search of all the fixtures and materials for the home and worked with a number or artisans to help complete the project.Debra Whitson Home Featuring Habersham Custom Cabinetry - WNC Magazine Feature

January Featured Product: American Treasures® Moderne End Table

by Joyce Eddy, Chairman of the Board January 16th, 2013

01-2358 - Habersham Moderne End TableEach month we pick a “featured product” to showcase on our home page.  For January, we’ve chosen the Moderne End Table.  Part of our popular American Treasures Collection, this table made its debut during the Fall 2012 High Point Market.

This decidedly modern design can lend a touch of casual, contemporary elegance to any décor.  Building upon the success of the Moderne designs launched during Spring 2012 market, this new piece reflects the same geometric design.  The term “Moderne” is an architectural term.  Sometimes referred to as “Style Moderne” or simply “modern”, it was a style of architecture that became popular in 1925 and by the 1960s, was called “Art Deco.” Available in countless finish options, this design is shown in Warm Silver.

Habersham Custom Bath Cabinetry in Architectural Digest February 2013 Issue

Habersham Custom Bath Cabinetry Architectural Digest February 2013In reviewing the various projects working their way through our factory, we’re seeing increasing demand for custom bath cabinetry. Over the years, we’ve watched the master bath become one of the key focus areas of in home design.  No longer just another room, it’s evolved into a  complete suite.

In fact, many masters today are outfitted with walk-in closets completely custom-tailored to the owner’s needs, as well as  dressing,  sitting, exercise areas and other features one might find in a luxury spa or resort.

To help homeowners create their own private escape, we’re always working on new designs for the master bath area.  To see some of our most recent bath designs and installations, visit the cabinetry section of our website.

What’s In A Name? Trumeau Mirror

Our trumeau wall mirror designs have been a steady seller for us over the years. The history behind these elegant designs is interesting –  A quick search on Wikipedia:

Habersham Trumeau Designstrumeau mirror is a wall mirror originally manufactured in France in the 18th century. It takes its name from the French word trumeau, which designates the space between windows. In England it is normally known as a “pier glass.”

Trumeau mirrors were originally intended to hang on a wall between windows, providing a decorative element and bringing more light to the room. Most antique trumeau mirrors are highly ornate and often gilded.

The mirror is almost always rectangular and sometimes includes a decorative portion at the top, with the mirror below it. Those designed to be placed above a mantelpiece, rather than between windows, could have candles placed in front of the mirror to increase ambient light.

Reproductions of 18th-century trumeau mirrors became popular in the Regency period in the 1950s, when French furniture was popular.
